It's also a terrible thing. I am still here. I still want to complete this project.<br />
<br />
There has been progress since 2016! I have 17 blog posts in draft form (for comparison, only 18 posts have been published here since 2013). The project is at a stage where it's hard to organize thoughts and decide what to do next.<br />
<br />
Sector67 is moving to a new building, which we are renovating extensively. I have occasionally been helping with the construction. Sector deserves none of the blame for this project's hiatus however-- that's all me.<br />

<br />
I started with the (Object - Path -) Simplify tool to reduce the number of points.<br />
Then I manually adjusted linework to disentangle areas where the lines are too close together or have odd angles. I also looked over the previous laser cuts to eliminate tiny projecting pieces and to detach parts that were hanging on by a thread.<br />
<br />
Here are a few examples of the simplified linework:<br />

I've been trying out materials, refining the structure, and improving the production method. <br />
This has been a slow, iterative process.<br />
<br />
I've been "auditioning" paper and cloth to find just the right materials.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span id="docs-internal-guid-7315fde6-7c6e-5d30-4ed9-57f162cd6905"><img height="225" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/zvDcH5CMnDetDVtaSq3ZP4hfdYYW1nnNMIgdll_puayb6A4hJPPy9OrzBz-gGX9rCM0XMvUaNOiic5Q52Haxr0WYQcnhfRxBqxfGh5yKUP59QkRWqLNGQ9yNb2MO099h5ymtAcVYmxc" width="400" /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Here's what it could potentially look like without any color:<br />

Production: </h3>
Laser-cutting the book board went well, although it does produce a lot of soot on the edges.<br />

<br />
<br />
I cut strips of flat magnetic sheet (sold as vent covers) to hold large sheets of paper down on the laser bed- a significant improvement from previous trials, when the paper would easily lift up and ruin the cuts:<br />

I developed a process for cutting and assembling the Merriam Cone feature, a stack of concentric circles that need to be glued into one unit. I leave about 1 mm of their outline uncut so I don't lose the tiny pieces through the laser cutter bed. I then stack them on a jig built with two sewing needles to align the first 10 pieces. The final 2 layers cover the holes.<br />

<h3>
Structure: </h3>
I am happy with the binding and the shape of the case (hard cover), but many structure-related questions linger. I'm still working out how to...<br />
<br />
- embed the magnets in the cover<br />
- secure the sewing to the cover<br />
- fold the cloth around the cover<br />
<br />
<br />
My goals still look very similar to what I was working on <a href="http://bathymetricbook.blogspot.com/2013/10/a-new-version.html" target="_blank">in late 2013</a>. Progress is slow, but I'll keep at it!<br />

I tried a new paper, a cloth for the book cover, and a paper to line the cover.<br />
<br />
My <a href="http://bathymetricbook.blogspot.com/2013/10/bathymetric-book-meets-laser-cutter.html" target="_blank">first tests on the laser cutter</a> used a Canson drawing paper that I happened to have lying around. I bought a heavyweight watercolor paper to test, and noticed two unforeseen problems with the result. First, the laser cuts caused a more significant yellowing of the watercolor paper. Second, the paper has a distinct texture on each side, which is visible as it alternates from page to page due to my book's structure. I found the alternating texture distracting and I wasn't happy with the yellow staining.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Testing laser cuts on a Strathmore cold press heavyweight watercolor paper </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Leaving those paper tests aside, I returned to the hard-cover prototype to try some new materials for the cover. The previous iteration of the prototype was simply covered in plain brown paper and had no lining. <br />
I chose a grey linen cloth to cover the book. After actually trying this, I felt that the rough texture of the linen clashed with the sleek laser cuts. While I want my book cloth to have a varied texture, the linen wasn't quite right. <br />

<br /></div>
Finally, I tried a bright blue cardstock to line the cover of the book. Because Crater Lake is known for its vivid color, I really wanted to incorporate a bright blue into the design. After trying this out, however, I found that the cardstock's thickness impedes the hinges of the cover. Aesthetically, I also felt that the material was too flat and that its color drew attention away from the shape of the lake, which should be the visual focus.<br />

It was progress, though not in the way that I had hoped. Instead of finalizing some of my materials, I learned a bit more about what I really want, and I realized that selecting materials will be a significant challenge as I move forward.<br />

<tr><td valign="top">It has been a long hiatus, but I am returning to this project! In fact, there were some developments back in October of 2015 that I'm now catching up on blogging.<br />
<br />
Thanks to my previous presentation at NACIS 2013, I was able to team up with fellow NACIS-ites Matt Dooley and Jake Coolidge to curate a special exhibit of tangible maps as part of the annual NACIS map gallery.<br />
<br />
The exhibit is now documented in <a href="http://www.cartographicperspectives.org/index.php/journal/article/view/cp82-dooley-et-al/1454" target="_blank">an article in Cartographic Perspectives</a> as well as <a href="http://tangiblemapexhibit.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">a dedicated blog</a>.<br />
<br />
My bathymetric book was featured alongside several other works. The exhibited maps were linked to the concept of tangibility in a variety of ways. Some, like mine, were meant to be touched by the map user. Other mapmakers highlighted the importance of touch in their design development or their production process.<br />

Megen Brittell, Amy Lobben, Megan Lawrence, and Manny Garcia's "Tactile Map Symbols across Three Media" was especially interesting. They conducted a study to compare materials for creating maps to be read by touch, like braille. I especially liked the microcapsule paper, which I had never encountered before. The m<span style="text-align: center;">icrocapsule paper is first printed with regular ink, then heat-treated to create raised areas wherever ink has been printed. </span><br />

The book is on hold, but I'm coming back to it!<br />
<br />
I realize it has been far too long since I last updated...<br />
<br />
I'm currently pushing to finish my master's thesis. I conducted an interview study addressing the use of mapping technology in Wilderness/Wildland Search and Rescue... (in places like Crater Lake National Park!)<br />
<br />
If you're intrigued by that topic, you can check out <a href="http://wisarandgis.blogspot.com/">wisarandgis.blogspot.com/</a><br />
<br />
I'l probably be back to sculptural mapping in a month or so.<br />
<br />
<b>Edit: </b>my thesis is available online at <a href="http://cmrrose.github.io/thesis">http://cmrrose.github.io/thesis</a>Caroline Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14121941650080626649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6038031753501856954.post-16858638620875947772014-05-26T22:52:00.001-05:002021-12-09T11:41:40.638-06:00Another Sculptural Lake Map (or: the Reason I Haven't Been Working on This Book)<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 21px;">I recently finished a unique and challenging map design project for the </span><a data-mce-href="http://hoofers.org" href="http://hoofers.org/" style="background-color: white; line-height: 21px;" target="_blank">Wisconsin Hoofers</a><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 21px;">, the outdoor clubs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It's another sculptural map of lake depth- this time featuring </span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 21px;">Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 21px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 21px;">The result is this three-dimensional installation with a magnetic surface, allowing anyone to change the features on the map. Labels can be added to show important features or completely stripped off for a more minimalist presentation. </span></span><br />

This project is embedded in the rest of my life, and most of my other projects have strict and swiftly-approaching deadlines. Although I don't have much time to devote to it at the moment, I am gradually developing the content, collecting options for the final structure and materials, and envisioning my production process. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In the meantime, here's a look at my current prototype, in which I'm scribbling my thoughts on how it's shaping up: </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This version is laser-cut and bound in folios with a Coptic binding; it has a hard cover and a magnet closure. It lies flat when opened to any page, which is an improvement over my previous binding. I especially like the way the hard cover encases and protects the delicate pages and exposed binding inside. I also like the laser-singed edges.</span></div>

<br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Looking at the original (handmade) version, here's what I'm modifying: </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"><b>1) Cutting method</b> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">I need the production version to be </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;">machine - cut, rather than cut by hand. There are probably dozens of ways to put holes in paper, including CNC routers, die cutting, digitally-controlled blade cutters, and so on. At this point, I feel that the laser cutter is a great option for me. Thanks to <a href="http://www.sector67.org/" target="_blank">Sector67</a>, I have access to the machine without having to buy it or maintain it myself, and I have great support for learning to use it and troubleshooting. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">My <a href="http://bathymetricbook.blogspot.com/2013/10/bathymetric-book-meets-laser-cutter.html" target="_blank">laser cutter tests turned out great</a>, and this method should allow me to cut several copies at once. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><b>2) Binding</b> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;">The hand-made version of the book was bound with a Japanese stab binding, in which holes are punched through the entire stack of pages and a cord is stitched through the holes and around the edges to secure the stack. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdUoaRzci-roVE5TxK_yerqLaF_QmJnTpqr3UF-sABFvKz03TiK5_f31PvYtcooUVOpf-mLhVT0XzzFHZCAQ0M14vem5ijQKyuSk8RTPBvcTbw0aq8vqeEVR8J4zyohoIDbamCsrDhyphenhyphenOVI/s1600/japanese_stab_binding.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdUoaRzci-roVE5TxK_yerqLaF_QmJnTpqr3UF-sABFvKz03TiK5_f31PvYtcooUVOpf-mLhVT0XzzFHZCAQ0M14vem5ijQKyuSk8RTPBvcTbw0aq8vqeEVR8J4zyohoIDbamCsrDhyphenhyphenOVI/s320/japanese_stab_binding.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;">The problem with the stab binding is that it restricts my thick, stiff pages and prevents them from flipping open nicely like a book. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-2QZf6J5y7tG8SiSjCbAdbRM88zDvaTmWPBu1fZGL8_wr7Gy1TE0MohYqy4Q_4mgFjRCaiy38eHAHS9iTI97r9C5VQYsbr4wdw7bjBDoaLsy2kuNfBS9CX670UseXFSz-bWXGlSBzAFfo/s1600/binding_problem.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-2QZf6J5y7tG8SiSjCbAdbRM88zDvaTmWPBu1fZGL8_wr7Gy1TE0MohYqy4Q_4mgFjRCaiy38eHAHS9iTI97r9C5VQYsbr4wdw7bjBDoaLsy2kuNfBS9CX670UseXFSz-bWXGlSBzAFfo/s320/binding_problem.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I used the stab binding with the original because it was built as a stack of single sheets. I now have the option to re-structure the piece as a stack of folded sheets (folios) and change the binding to allow the book to easily open flat. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;">I tried out a Coptic Stitch binding today, which allows the book to open completely flat, and it seems to do a good job of keeping each page tightly aligned in the stack. That's essential because keeping the relief model properly aligned is the binding's most important job! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; text-indent: 36pt; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; text-indent: 36pt; white-space: pre-wrap;"><b>3) Cover </b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; text-indent: 36pt; white-space: pre-wrap;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"> I would like to incorporate a hard cover to protect the delicate pages. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><b>4) Content? </b></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap;">I feel that the book has untapped potential for communicating concept, and what it's lacking is something to keep the reader turning the pages. I think it could tell a story... A story about looking deeper, seeing below the surface, and being captivated by nature's infinite intricacy; about seeing what was unseen, whether through the <a href="http://oe.oregonexplorer.info/craterlake//bathy_cl_2000.html">multibeam scanner that my bathymetric data came from</a>, or through a microscope or a telescope; and about cultivating the sense of wonder that Rachel Carson wrote about, which can foster environmental stewardship. </span></span><br />

I want to extend a huge THANK YOU to everybody who spoke with me about my talk and my project. I feel buoyed by your compliments and excited to share my finished piece with you someday! </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I am now exploring options for creating my "production prototype," or an easily reproduced version of the book. I'm figuring out the tools, the materials, and the process that will ultimately create my edition. This summer, I expanded both my toolbox and my support network by joining a local makerspace/hackerspace called </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><a href="http://www.sector67.org/" target="_blank">Sector67</a>. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">My monthly membership dues give me access to a wide variety of tools, including a laser cutter, along with the guidance of experienced users. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Because the hand-cutting was the most time and labor-intensive aspect of the original, I worked to replace that step first... by creating a </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">a laser-cut draft of the book. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This draft makes two important modifications from the original version: </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It is machine-cut, instead of hand-cut, which dramatically reduces the time and effort required to cut the contours. </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It is laid out in folios, or folded sheets, instead of flat single sheets, which allows me to change the binding, letting the book's pages open more easily. </span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">To implement these changes, my proficiency in software came into play again. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE5kx9s08A-Gl7gtAMGodkWXhC91x0LseIoAmmWDlsQlWNuXkkAwURt6x3qfc-s_MQJkqLc1VUVDLcEASiv8MYLXEtqVpz9-HzXZL3Ln7XkC1Hsxv0MU4gSqlbwRMYNR_rXyN6APb8F-E_/s1600/illustrator_select_cut.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE5kx9s08A-Gl7gtAMGodkWXhC91x0LseIoAmmWDlsQlWNuXkkAwURt6x3qfc-s_MQJkqLc1VUVDLcEASiv8MYLXEtqVpz9-HzXZL3Ln7XkC1Hsxv0MU4gSqlbwRMYNR_rXyN6APb8F-E_/s320/illustrator_select_cut.png" height="251" width="320" /></a></div>
</td>
<td><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I took my original bathymetric contours and laid them out in a double-wide sheet with the normal contour shapes on the right side and their mirror image on the left. This allowed for the change in the binding structure. </span></td>
</tr>
</tbody></table>
<table><tbody>
<tr>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Although it may seem very streamlined when I present my step-by-step procedure, real life wasn't quite so smooth. Even with excellent guidance from the Sector 67 staff, I was completely new at this, so mistakes were made. I exported these files many, many times (manually selecting the correct lines for each file again and again) before getting every setting right. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Each large sheet of drawing paper accommodated four double-wide pages for the book, each of which would be folded in half to form a folio. <span style="font-family: inherit;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisJX-0xK9WS2uJ8N7MME5VrevUoIjxRjWv_nBOTQuw8-CUTsCOiZcj8udhhW2im7V422pJM3YcMKuAnJItl9PWw6hIxlFprPzyLxNstZwDK7SUpfBX1ARfbU4ZO3IAefbV-kVGeKe-6q4/s400/Neudecker+Unrecallable+Now+1998.jpg" height="263" width="400" /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
This is Mariele Neudecker's <a href="http://www.marieleneudecker.co.uk/unrecallable.html" target="_blank">Unrecallable Now</a>. I especially found myself attracted to intricacy, detail, and realism in this piece... and possibly a bit of idealism in its flawless landscape and ethereal glow. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />The book features several beautiful, geographically inspired works by <a href="http://www.mayalin.com/" target="_blank">Maya Lin</a>. <span style="font-family: inherit;">Finally, as I noted in my <a href="http://bathymetricbook.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-making-of.html" target="_blank">Making Of</a> post, some inspiration came from the material itself, a thick, textured white paper that I really wanted to use, especially in layers. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
Having a background in book conservation and a bit of bookbinding, I liked the the idea of using the three-dimensional space within a book. I also wanted to bind a book for myself, something I hadn't done yet. All of these factors brought me to decide: I would build a book and cut the shape of a lake within it. </span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSyyuyRJ81AAFjORfMy10_XrIPEtZL2y7_E5ggzRAxaVv0ubLHCUufKiops5jrN5JhMnlLBTkrrup6_eJVnxSfOr2SQ6tWNr_Izfp9ErgH_qplhnIrNjcxvyWvdTLYUdp0-vySo6FJLMHX/s1600/divider_100px.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSyyuyRJ81AAFjORfMy10_XrIPEtZL2y7_E5ggzRAxaVv0ubLHCUufKiops5jrN5JhMnlLBTkrrup6_eJVnxSfOr2SQ6tWNr_Izfp9ErgH_qplhnIrNjcxvyWvdTLYUdp0-vySo6FJLMHX/s1600/divider_100px.png" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">With my material and bathymetric map idea in mind, I knew I wanted to emphasize depth. Though I initially imagined using one of the Great Lakes or a lake on the northern Minnesota border, I found that Crater Lake tops the list of deepest lakes in the United States. What made it stand out even further was its high ratio of depth to longest surface dimension. This was what made it possible to create a scale model of the lake floor in a small book with a notable vertical dimension. Lake Superior, for instance, is very large; had I represented its depth in 3/8 of an inch, its surface would extend about 520 inches (more than 43 feet) at the widest. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Crater Lake is conveniently a very small, compact shape and is <i>very </i>deep for its surface area. It is also a National Park and a beautiful location that many people are familiar with. D</span>etailed underwater survey data is easily available from the USGS. <span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span>Furthermore, i<span style="font-family: inherit;">ts volcanic past has created many interesting underwater features; steep cliffs plunge in at the edges and cones and domes lift up from the lake floor, making it an easy choice for my Bathymetric Book.</span><br />

He writes about the way w</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">e look everywhere for inspiration and constantly take it in. We need to let that breath out and create things ourselves to keep the creative process moving. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">"inspiration is applying what you’ve received" </span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I've found this very true during the course of this project. What was briefly a finished product became a work-in-progress again and then again. By contemplating the piece and explaining it to many people, I expanded my concept of what it could represent. </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">My new prototype goals (<a href="http://bathymetricbook.blogspot.com/2013/10/a-new-version.html">blog post about those here</a>) extend far beyond what I envisioned when I began to create the book. </span><br />

Finally, one event became a turning point for me, making the book a work-in-progress again and initiating my project to create an edition. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I noticed that an upcoming map design competition at a statewide conference (the 2013 </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><a href="http://wlia.org/index.cfm">Wisconsin Land Information Association</a></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> Annual Conference) </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">included a "Map Books and Atlases" category. Because many map design competitions are digital submission only, I seized the chance to exhibit the book in person. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">With a map competition in mind, I considered how to hold the attention of a viewer for a bit longer, and that was the point when I began to incorporate narrative into the piece. On the page facing the 3D model, I added a brief geological history of the lake. I included a map to label several features that could be seen in the model, including the Chaski Bay Landslide and Merriam Cone. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg66uS2Ce7L6I2o5kC-oxa7LJ13tygAPqRjyl9EqCUjAOmUDglQO7KNOxIdc3IbW2aE7fSMNvlG-Qy7r5a2la575dM3DFGIYjOXu19BqU7OY9Ws0cD4XKpByXfpXzfV_w39oZpHXG9_690K/s1600/geo_page.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg66uS2Ce7L6I2o5kC-oxa7LJ13tygAPqRjyl9EqCUjAOmUDglQO7KNOxIdc3IbW2aE7fSMNvlG-Qy7r5a2la575dM3DFGIYjOXu19BqU7OY9Ws0cD4XKpByXfpXzfV_w39oZpHXG9_690K/s400/geo_page.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The added content guides the reader to see the lake's shape as the result of geological process; it serves to reinforce the fact that the book depicts a real place and engages them in studying the intricate model. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />So, I brought the book to the conference and left it on the display table, hoping that someone might notice... I just wasn't sure whether the book warranted much attention. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">And it did garner attention- thanks to other UW students, especially my classmate <a href="http://www.geo-odyssey.com/" target="_blank">Chris</a>. He shared it on Twitter, directed people to go see it, and encouraged me to get in touch with Crater Lake National Park about creating a published product. Having an advocate like Chris was invaluable; he gave my book the publicity that I felt too shy or uncertain to initiate. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I took home three awards: Best in Category, Best Student Submission, and People's Choice. I was also especially encouraged by many inquiring and admiring comments over the course of the two day conference. Even when readers didn't say anything, I saw the book drawing people in as they inspected the model and turned the pages. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">After an eleven month stasis, I could see new potential in this project! The awards and feedback gave me a newfound assurance that the piece was worth both showing off and developing further. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Although their answer was a tentative 'maybe,' I was hooked on the idea of producing an edition. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When showing my book, one of the first questions that I'm often asked is: "How did you make this?"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For the very first version of the Bathymetric Book, t</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">he design was limited by my simple tools and by materials I already had and </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">most of the work was done by hand. My original method may be interesting, but it's what I'm trying to do away with! The goal of my current project is to move beyond that, making a version that's much more easily reproduced... Yet the </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">original process</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">is</i><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> important because this is how my initial concepts and design were implemented. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I started with a stack of paper. I had eleven sheets of a thick, textured white paper that I assumed to be watercolor paper, bought unpackaged and unmarked on clearance at a craft store. I liked the weight, the texture, and the color, especially with a stack fanned into layers; that texture creates a very subtle variety of shadows across the sheet, and the thickness gives nice definition to the layers where the light casts a shadow off the edge. When I bought the paper, I wasn't sure yet what to do with it (I do this frequently with such materials). Luckily, it helped inspire this project some months later.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Briefly, my procedure was this:</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">downloaded data from a USGS survey of the lake floor</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">created contour lines using <a href="http://www.qgis.org/" target="_blank">Quantum GIS</a> (a free geographic information software) </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">cut my limited stock of paper sheets in half to double the thickness of the book </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">scaled according to the thickness of my stack of paper, making the horizontal scale match the vertical ratio of 1932 feet (depth of the lake) to approx. 3/8 inch (depth of my paper stack) </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">printed a single contour, along with the shoreline and scale, onto each sheet of paper using my little old inkjet</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">cut out each contour with an Exacto knife... this took <i>hours. </i>My hand hurt and then felt numb from gripping the knife and making tiny, tight corners in excruciating detail. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">pieced together the features rising up from the lakebed, such as the Merriam Cone. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">stacked up the layers, along with covers and a few additional pages</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">punched holes through the entire stack </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">sewed a Japanese stab binding, stitching through the stack and around the edge to form the book </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">clamping the book together, painted the lake model. I decided after a few days that adding a color would help the lake really 'pop.' In plain white, the model was very unassuming; a bold blue made the lake's shape visually striking, especially from a distance. </span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span id="makingofvideo" style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I'd like to direct you to my time-lapse video: <a href="http://youtu.be/_B52iw6tHTg" target="_blank">The Making of a Bathymetric Book</a>, which shows my process for creating the original version. There's a notable omission in the video: it leaves out the digital work. I recorded this while making the second copy of the book, which is virtually identical to the first.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Oc358-mBau8" width="560"></iframe></span></div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Another question I frequently get is: "Can you do [insert lake name]?" Part of the goal of this project is to create a workflow that will transfer to similar work using different data. That includes eliminating much of the hand-work... which may be impressive, but it's cumbersome and inefficient. Machines can certainly do the cutting for me... although the binding may still be hand-sewn.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Perhaps it will lose the charm of its handmade cuts, but I believe that the piece is partially about intricacy... and a whole string of related concepts that I'm still trying to draw together coherently. It's based on very detailed data that I just couldn't execute by hand. My cuts are too angular. The paint smudges. That's why I'm comfortable with <a href="http://bathymetricbook.blogspot.com/2013/10/bathymetric-book-meets-laser-cutter.html">turning the detail-rendering over to a laser cutter</a> for future versions. </span><br />

It shows the underwater terrain of Crater Lake, Oregon, USA, cut from layers of paper to form a three-dimensional model. I tried to match the vertical and horizontal scales as closely as possible to create a scale model of the lake bed. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I originally created the book as part of an independent study course in cartography. </span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Fewer than ten people saw it, and then it sat on my shelf for the next eleven months. </span></div>

to the positive response that it sparked, I took on the challenge of reproducing the book so I could share it further. </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">I hope to take the design from a
unique object to an edition of 50 to 100 copies, which I will not be cutting by hand as I did with the original! This challenge includes reproducing the 3D model efficiently as well as improving </span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 115%;">ancillary features including the binding and text. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This blog exists for several related reasons: </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">to</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> document the project, </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">to allow me </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">to both explain and show the story of its making, and</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> to help me organize and vocalize my thoughts throughout that journey. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This project is more than a final product; it's a process that has already afforded </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">me </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">many opportunities to learn, to share, and to connect with great people. </span></div>
